Velma strode out into the wind,
holding her hat.
She marched off to the bakery
as she did regularly.
Velma had taken Susan under her wing,
as it were.
A spinster and a single mother.
Well, Susan would be a single mother soon.
Velma ordered breakfast and smiled when Susan arrived.
They chatted warmly for an hour in the comfort smells.
Velma brought home some bread.
She’d share it with the other girls at the rooming house.
