Excited to have company, Velma got one of the other spinsters to drive her to the station, wait, and bring Scarlett and Sherman back to the rooming house.
Cases up the steps, across the porch, up to Velma’s bed and sitting rooms.
The girls unpacked.
Sherman lounged on the bed.
Stretched, languid, lazy. Typical.
Velma rolled her eyes.
They had a lovely dinner in the dining hall.
They laughed and chatted.
They had desserts and aperitifs late into the night.
Finally they retired, tumbled into bed.
Velma slept on the daybed in her sitting area.
She slept deeply and better than she had in a long long time. She felt warm, cuddly cozy when she awoke —
and spotted Sherman curled up next to her!
He looked her in the eye, unabashed.
Velma giggled and petted his fuzzy head.
