Velma strode to the lost & found. Phew. It was there. After her last shift volunteering at the library, she’d returned to the rooming house to discover her beautiful robin’s egg blue lunch bag missing. These small losses wore on her; she’d slept poorly worrying about her bag, a special handmade gift. The fabric reminded her somehow of both the intricate patterns of Eastern cultures and of her New England grandmother; the bag’s shape allowed her to bring leftovers sitting upright. She prized it. And… there was the rest of her lunch, too, still in tact.
Across the room, Velma slid behind the circulation desk and got to work. Story time had finished up, and she worked quickly with the children’s librarian to move the fidgety youngsters through their checkouts, sometimes their first. First-time checkouts were slow, but very rewarding.
