Velma rode back to the rooming house with Vesta in the old Model A. Separated during most of the party, Velma briefly worried about smalltalk on the return to the country. She needn’t have. Vesta was energized by it all: city lights, urban culture, talking politics (the Occupation movement was spreading), party foods, smart women, and even a wee gin. Or two. A fine line marks carefree from careless, and Vesta was driving it as they jovially pondered events of the party. Velma was nervous by nature, never mind on the fine line. She snuck a nip from her flask, shivered, and laughed heartily at Vesta’s yarn.
