As usual at parties during national crises, this one was overwhelmingly female. Velma and Vesta had parted ways at the door and each found their coterie of fashionable women, some from the rooming house, some the library, some the city. Talk of the Occupations circulated of course along with talk of books and fashion. Velma loved being an ‘extra girl.’ Meeting city women, as she had once been, having a fun festive time in the city of blinking lights, sipping a glass of wine. Or two. And best of all, little pressure to present to the few men in attendance. At her age, she’d had enough of that. Even a third glass of wine would not break with decorum if nobody were counting, after all.
