Chairing committees, budgeting, running the department, interviewing potential hires, research, tending, filing, thinking. Then there are the children, the house, the spouse, the block, the schools, the commute, the kitten. Lunches, dinners, breakfast in the car. Toys everywhere, snack remnants almost everywhere, homework, volunteering at the schools – both of them. And then. This. Sacred space. Silent space. A saving space. Out of a catalogue for bedding or an ad for a bed and breakfast. When Virginia Woolf first counseled “a room of one’s own” in 1929 she had no idea what we were in for.
