This is Vesta, another one of the girls at the rooming house on the edge of town. With the proper support and a bit better luck, she would have been a well-dressed intellectual. We mostly find her reading in a shaded corner of the garden, sitting on the stone bench under the lilac tree. Her reading tastes are wide-ranging. She pored over Marx’s Capital for months, periodically picks up volumes of Emily Dickinson, is know to admire George Eliot, and one time was seen nipping away to her corner with a copy of that risque eighteenth century tome, John Cleland’s Fanny: A Woman of Pleasure.
